Refrigerant Quick Reference

Common refrigerants used in residential and light commercial HVAC systems.

The most common modern residential refrigerant. Non-ozone-depleting but a potent greenhouse gas. Being phased down under EPA regulations.

R-22 (Freon)

Legacy refrigerant, no longer manufactured in the US since 2020. Only reclaimed R-22 is available. Expensive and increasingly scarce.

R-32

Next-generation refrigerant with lower global warming potential than R-410A. Mildly flammable (A2L) — requires EPA-certified technicians.

R-454B (Puron Advance)

The newest low-GWP refrigerant being adopted by major manufacturers. Mildly flammable (A2L). Required in new equipment from 2025 onward.
